Waverley Old Time Country Music

October 19, 2008

The Waverley Old Time Country Music Acoustic Group had our annual Hoedown weekend on the 19th, 20th & 21st August. The weekend was a huge success and donations were made to the Waverley Fire Brigade and the Waverley Baptist Church’s Sunday School.

The performers came from far and near, and the music flowed over the weekend. There were lots of faces smiling, feet tapping and some very talented performers singing and playing. One such performer was a shy man called Jeremy from Eltham. He is multi talented and it was a privilege to hear him perform on his Irish Harp. We hope he comes back again soon.

Cliff and I would like to thank the people who come to support us on our group days and annual Hoedowns. Some travel great distances and spend money in this town. This community is friendly and giving; this is demonstrated when the people came through the door at the Baptist Church each month. We would love to see more Waverley people come as the higher proportion we have are from out of town. So, if you are free come and join us or listen, when on the first Saturday of each month at 1pm. We have a lovely country music family.
Cindy and Cliff Burgess

Te Mahana rest home

October 19, 2008

Our manager, Judy, had a 10 day break in early September. Although looking after calves and things is what she calls a holiday, lots of us wouldn’t, but the change has done her good, and she enjoyed the time staying in Invercargill with her son.
The Patea Area School children come each Thursday and they do different things with our residents. They are learning from experience – our ressies – both ressies and school children enjoy the time together. One day some of our residents were teaching them to knit, it was lots of fun, and the children enjoyed it too and hopefully remember some of what they were shown. Another time they children were asking how things were done in the ‘old’ days with all enjoying the reminiscing too.
Some of our residents were invited to attend an RSA concert held in the Hawera RSA; they really loved their day there and the afternoon tea.
Our residents were invited to join the Old Folks Association for a fun-filled afternoon of “beetle”. Quite a few ressies went across and thoroughly enjoyed the games and the cuppa and chatter after.
On the 23rd September lots of our residents went to a Fashion Show at the Hawera Bowling Club, put on by the bowlers.  Our manager, Judy, took part in the show, which made it all the more interesting for our residents that attended. It was a lovely day out for them and they enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea too.
The 24th of September saw more residents out and about when they went to Wanganui. Some went and visited family and others had lunch in Wanganui, and they looked round some shops.
All our residents were very happy when Nana Cooney returned home from hospital after quite a long stay there. Everyone was very happy to see her and I’m sure she was happy to be home too.
We have two new residents, Mr Les and Mrs Alva Anderson, from Waverley. We are enjoying having them with us. Also Geoff Peacock has come back for another visit and we also hope he is enjoying his time with us.
You just never know where you will see the Te Mahana van these days; they certainly get around and thoroughly enjoy every minute of it.
We do have other services available which are: Day care – Respite care – Meals on Wheels which are available Monday to Friday. If you are interested in any of the above please feel free to give Judy, our manager, a call on 273 8442.

Turi indoor bowls

October 19, 2008

Hello to all our readers. This is the last report from the Turi Club for 2008.
25th August. Tonight was the closing night of the South Association. A good gathering of bowlers turned up to play bowls for the last time on a Monday night for this season. Visitors from other Taranaki Associations were invited as was the President of the Taranaki Centre, Trevor Bourne and his wife Sue, also the Centre Secretary Marlene Clement. Every one enjoyed a friendly night of bowls and afterwards a lovely supper provided by the south players. The winners for the night were presented with their prizes of Instant Scratchy tickets: 1st went to Trevor Bourn’s team and 2nd went to Bill Schrader’s team. We did not hear any cheers from any of the ticket winners!
26th August. Last month we left you after the first night of the Handicap singles after four games. Marg Newlove had four wins, Wayne Scown and Jenni Newland had 3 and a half wins. Tonight we had another 4 games and at the end of the evening there were two players had 7 wins, 14 points from 8 games:  Marg and Julian. The next closest players were Wayne Scown with13 points, Noeline Finlay with 12 points and Ray Finlay with 10 points. Marg and Julian had to play off to get the winner. Most of the bowlers stayed to watch and were shown a great game of bowls. Marg had a good game and was ahead of Julian when disaster struck and she dropped 4 points on the 9th end and let Julian edge ahead to win.
2nd September. Tonight was the Turi Club’s prize giving and AGM. All the winners from the season were presented with their badges, certificates and gifts. The most improved player went to Marg Newlove. The President called the bowlers together for the AGM. Ray Finlay was once again voted in as President, and Jim Newlove as Vice President. Jenni Newland – Secretary / Treasurer. Doris Brunton – Press reporter. Rocky Adams – Selector to Hawera. Match committee: W Scown, C Reynish, D Brunton and R Adams. Bowling committee: all members.
9th September. Tonight all but one of our players, family and two past bowlers, Margaret and Wattie, gathered together at the Red rock for our end of season dinner where our hosts Michelle and Todd provided us with a lovely meal in a warm and comfortable room. Thank you from all the Turi bowlers.
13th September. Nineteen teams turned up to play 9 bowl triples in the Hawera Community Centre. We found Martin Harding had been left off the list and was not included in the draw. Jenni Newland withdrew her team and told Martin to take over her number; a real sporting gesture. After four games Martin’s team, as well as Jim Nickle’s team, had four wins each and had to play off to decide the winners. Three ends were played and Martin’s team was 1st and Jim’s 2nd. Colleen Reynish won the raffle.
17th September. Tonight was the Umpire’s Pairs in Stratford. Seven players from Turi went up to play; they were Wayne and Colleen, Jenni and Jim, Ray and Winnie. Doris teamed up with Ella Smaile from the Naumai Club in Hawera. Our teams played well and had some very good games but not good enough for a prize. Oh yes! Colleen did win one of the raffles.
All I can say now is: from our club to all our loyal readers near and far (yes, that means you Lorna), all the best for the rest of the year. Best wishes for the festive season and new year.

Katchafire at Paepae in the Park

October 19, 2008

We had the committee meeting for the Paepae in the Park at the Hunter Shaw building on the 10th of September. I apologise to the people of Patea and others for not putting news in for the last couple of months.
Anyway, not to worry, we’re back on the drawing board again. Wait for it – here is what you are all waiting for, the main artist of the show. Katchafire is coming to Patea on Waitangi Day 6th February 2009 to celebrate with us all on that day. There are other entertainers as well and local groups.
We are always looking for more helpers; our next meeting is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1pm in the Hunter Shaw building. You are welcome to come along and join us; most welcome!
Katchafire: Aotearoa’s premier reggae experience…
Reggae is one of the bloodlines of New Zealand music, and the all-Maori band Katchafire has become its foremost advocate today. A family affair from day one in 1997, founder and lead guitarist Grenville Bell and sons Logan (lead vocals) and Jordan (drums) remain the core of the band. Transcending their origins in a Hamilton garage as a cover band, Katchafire took their Marley-inspired original music to the bars and clubs, building up a fan base of thousands. Their exceptional debut album, the prophetically named Revival, sold in excess of 45,000 copies (more than double platinum in New Zealand) and they scored massive hits with songs like Giddy Up, the nation’s biggest selling single of 2002-3.
After building on that success at home with the platinum follow-up “Slow Burning”, Katchafire took a major step forward when New Zealand foreign exchange students introduced their Kiwi reggae vibes to the fertile soil of the Hawaiian Islands. Underground popularity soon exploded onto the airwaves, and by the summer of 2006 Katchafire was topping the sales charts in the Aloha State and headlining at the 10,000 capacity Waikiki Shell. The past 2 years have found the boys giving their passports a considerable workout, from festival appearances all over Europe to increasingly successful mainland U.S. excursions. They now draw huge crowds all over the Pacific, from Australia to Guam and Saipan.
On record, Katchafire reached a new level of musical depth and maturity on 2007’s “Say What You’re Thinking”. With jazz, pop, rock and even hip-hop influences enhancing a solid roots foundation, they scored their greatest American chart success to date with a 6 showing on the Billboard Reggae chart. Katchafire is well-known for trading instruments among themselves during their marathon live shows. That versatility is demonstrated as never before on this album, with no less than five band contributing songs and sharing lead vocal duties. Front man Logan Bell contributes four tunes including the instant classic love song “Meant to Be”. Jamey Ferguson contributes his unmistakable raspy leads on four more, including the thoughtful title track and gospel-tinged “Doesn’t Anybody”. Percussionist Leon Davey shows off his vocal skills on “Now Girl” and “Love Letter”, as does drummer Jordan Bell on “J. Dubb” and keybooardist Haani Totorewa with “This World”.
2008 is shaping up as a momentous year in the history of Katchafire. At home, in January they shared the stage with acts like Rage Against the Machine and Bjork at the Big Day Out Festival. In February they opened for UB40 and Maxi Priest on the Raggamuffin tour of Australia. And March found them launching another U.S. tour with showcase appearances at Austin’s South By Southwest Music and Festival, including one at City Hall. With the musical evolution evident on their latest release, combined with their relentless tour schedule and phenomenal live shows, it looks like only a matter of time before the whole world is Katchafire country.
